When in Rome do as the Romans do

The whole point of travel is to see new things / have new experiences / learn new things / get out of your own comfort zone or bubble!!

It seems that the "its all about me and my feelings" generation no longer believes or understand in this concept -they just want to trot around the globe expecting everything to be the same as back in their own country!!

NEWS FLASH - you are in a different country and you should do ---- as the old saying goes - - - -
When in Rome do as the Romans do!!

So stop your moaning and get on with enjoying the best of what NZ has to offer - or any other country!!

Do you think the Three Wise Men complained about the lack of camel's (for transport) or the weather (to cold) or the lack of Fish (middle eastern food based on Goat) or lack of three star tents in the dessert or the lack of GPS systems (navigated by a star) or . . . . .

Get real

MERRY Christmas to all

Covid 19 and Christmas

Tuesday, December 20, 2022 0

oldbearnews editor Buahahahaha  -  the text usually goes something like this:

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town

He's making a list
He's checking it twice;
He's gonna find out who's naughty or nice

Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees you when you're sleeping
And he knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Cause Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees you when you're sleeping
And he knows when you're awake
And he knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout                                                                                                   I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming
I mean a big fat man with a long white beard
He's coming to town

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnA52s7qceM&ab_channel=MichaelBubl%C3%A9

“Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town” is a Christmas song, written by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie. The earliest known recorded version of the song was by banjoist Harry Reser and his band on October 24, 1934. It was then sung on Eddie Cantor’s radio show in November 1934. Some 200 Artist's have since re-recorded this song!

:P   I am going to butcher it now - to be more - *cough* up-to-date!! At least in my place

You better watch out

You better not fly
You better not spout
I'm telling you why
Covid Flu is coming my home

I'm taking my test's
I am checking it twice;
I'll see if I was naughty or nice
Covid Flu is coming to my home

It grabs me while I'm sleeping
And it knows when I'm wide awake
It don't care if I've been bad or good
So be vacc'ed for goodness sake!

You better watch out
I'd better not cry
I'd better not go out
I'm telling you why
I mean a big cold with a long sneeze and wheeze
It's coming to my home

Har har har har - urm - I honestly do not understand how this can be - so far in the three years or so of Covid running round the world - I stayed virus free!! Despite the best efforts of various people to give it to me - free of charge and all!!!!  Notwithstanding the CLL I got and so forth!!!

That however did not prevent me from getting a good dose of Summer Flu/Cold - so have been sneezing and wheezing all week long!!

Hmmmmm   gets the fresh garlic and some whiskey and couple of pills and settles in for the night!!!

Hohohohohoho

When you can run your BBQ at Christmas - and feel toastie too!

Monday, December 19, 2022 0

One should not ever trust blindly what one can see on the internet.  Usually I do back check some stuff - and the Milankovitch Cycles have long been established as a factual past / present and future life of our planet!

Technically we are still in an ice age - albeit with a warm inter-period!

Here is a vid on tube - that explains this in a simple to follow visual!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01aFP88qfQs&ab_channel=Astrum

I took a couple of things  away from this

Winter in the French Alps - Imgur( this is really beautiful.....) | Ski resorts france, Ski resort, Best family ski resorts

In 13 000 (let me type that - thirteen thousand) years there will have been a change in seasons relating to our monthly calendar. So during December/January months the northern countries will have a lovely summer night and whip out their BBQ's and wine coolers and sit out in their gardens 'till late at night and enjoy an evening sun and friends and social get-togethers, While the southern Hemisphere folks will be skiing and making lots of snow-men/women/kids/figures!!!

Skiing in NZ during Nov/ Dec / Jan / Feb  - Christkindl markets - Gluehwein - roasting Chestnuts - Christmas light decorations shining away from 5 pm on-wards!!

  C  A  N  '  T    W  A  I  T

I am looking so forward to experience this asap!!  No expensive plane tickets and travel arrangements need to be made for this or next year!!  Just a tiny matter of a few years - ok - some 13 000 years to be waiting - but hey - I will get there!!! I should make plans for that already - hmm lets see - first of all I need to invest into a pair of decent skis and thermal undies and - yup - snow-chains for the car and . . . .

The other thing - as said before technically we still in a global long term ice age cycle - and yes despite our best efforts - eventually we will get our glaciers back - I just have to wait some 9000 (let me type that -- nine thousand) years for that or so!!   NO PROBLEM there -  patience is a virtue - and lately I had to - urm - *cough* grow my virtues!! We should stop dick-in round with this CO2 Angst and just get on with it - let nature take its course!! After all - we all want our glaciers back - right?!

To be fair though  - while I am looking forward to experiencing my birthday in a summer setting (oh those trips to the West coast will be so special) my sister (living in Europe) on the other hand might struggle to comprehend a regular Summer temperatures (say 25c - 30c) Christmas!!  Sorry Sis'!!

Bring it on!!!!!!

Did the Grinch really destroy Christmas??

Friday, December 16, 2022 0

oldbearnews editor

We live in interesting times

Last night we finished watching Tim Allen's Santa Clauses - a six part mini series.  Theme of the show - it is more about the giving then the receiving of gifts!

Then this morning I saw two headlines in the news:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/man-sentenced-for-brutal-punch-tells-judge-thanks-for-devastating-my-christmas/BHEVM4WE2VGGHJU4GSGPKRRRFQ/

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/130766474/young-women-traumatised-after-group-of-teens-brutally-assaulted-them-at-christchurch-bus-stop

There are also a ton of clips online that have similar themes - most recent I saw was from a trial of a dude who beat up a reporter just because he did not like what the reporter wrote!  He agreed that he used violence and would not like to be treated in same manner, then went on to state that he felt he was 100% justified in his actions, as the written word - was offensive / threatening to him which required retributions!!! Go figure

Cruise the news and you will keep finding similar stories all the time!

During a mid 70's study with a youth group we learned that we live in an "Egocentric" time.  Or as I like to say - it is all about me and my feelings! Critical self reflection and contemplation of your own actions is no longer part of their lives! The classical mantra is - I can do whatever - wherever -whomever I want to do and no one can tell me otherwise. Whence the anti authority movements we see on the increase - the de-fund the Police / Religion / Army / Anti law and order systems - School's even - unless they can be controlled and used as tools for furthering their own goals!

And boy - are they angry - on a level that is hard to fathom!

The "Grinch" has not yet featured in Allen's Santa movies - although one could
argue that Jack Frost would fit the mold very nicely!   All protagonists had one thing in common - they think of their own needs / wants first before thinking of others.

The Christmas Grinch story serves as a reminder that during the Christmas season (and really - all year round), it is not about the presents and getting stuff, but caring about one another and the loving family and friends you are with. And if you happen to have a “Grinch” among your loved ones during this holiday season, remember that her/his shows of anger or frustration are very likely to mask deeper, more difficult feelings of pain that are much harder to experience and to show! And if YOU are the Grinch -  consider this:

From Yoda - Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

(its just a coincidence that they - along with Kermit - are in GREEN!!)

Sadly there will be a lot more suffering yet! Unless of course we can hold on to the notion of CHRIST - MAS(s)  and spread some good news ourselves!

Annual Epistle for 2022

Thursday, December 15, 2022 0

oldbearnews editor

Welcome to our annual Christmas letter for 2022.  In many ways, a lot has happened since our last epistle- and in many other ways – not a lot.

Michael is keeping well. The second bone marrow transplant seems to be holding! Fingers crossed!!!   His latest is his second hip-replacement which happened on 18th Oct!! Apart from that he is doing well!!

Jonno started his usual job at the ski-field and has changed jobs upwards mid-season – he is now repairing broken skis etc!!  In a few weeks time (his summer job) he will be 2IC at Milford Lodge– a promotion up the food chain!!  We may see him there either this December or January 23!

Pam is working hard to earn the many dollars we needed to pay off our Bearmobile#2 (currently the bank is owning the last of the 4 wheels – after this it is all ours!!!) Of course we also need the many dollars for the various trips away – our respite care away from all our worries.

Reinhold of course is a worry as ever. He had an episode which necessitated a visit to the After Hours Surgery – where they informed us of him having CLL ( a chronic form of Leukemia)!!!!  Yikes.  3 monthly blood tests later have confirmed the diagnosis – albeit at a level that is minor and just needs long-term monitoring!! He feels there is a big sword hanging over his head! Apart from that, he keeps himself busy restoring old furniture – and then try and on-sell them (which is easier said then done).

Our nephew birthed a son – so that makes Reinhold some distant-great-something and my YOUNGER Sister a Grandmother!!  Way to go little sister!!!!

Covid of course has been a huge disruption to everyone concerned – yes we had lock-downs like everyone else!!  So we have not managed as many trips away as we had hoped – and are thankful that we escaped the worst of it!!

Despite all of that, we had a lovely14 days away from home late last summer; freedom camping where we did enjoy the sun/ocean/wine and fresh air! Best of all – our “trainer-wheels” we had sold to a couple in the North Island, managed a trip to our shores and visited us - so we had both Bearmobiles on our drive for 2 hours or so!! Suffice to say – both vans are going strong!! You can follow our journeys on MEWE-papabearreinhold!

Pam did catch Covid – and despite her best efforts and breathing on me all night long – I stayed clean!!  Go figure!! Those extra white blood-cells from my CLL must have been doing a sterling job! Like most countries our Government has since decided to “live” with this virus – so at point of typing we have zero restrictions!! Fingers crossed there!!

Working from home – is hard at times ---->

Trust that life is treating you all well. Jade is enjoying her 3rd child – Thomas his first and Sissi her little one and my “little princess” – well – look at you – almost all grown up!!

Anyhow - saw this on the net the other day - still can't get my head around this - how a supposedly renown News Service could run such a stupid line :

The oddity of being a christian minority in a Christian majority country

Tuesday, October 25, 2022 0

oldbearnews editor

New Zealand has a interesting human (or lack thereof) history. For millions of years no HUMAN set foot on our islands.  Then some 1000 years or so back the first settlers came - our local Maori.

Later - after Cook - originally some English folks settled and of course many followed afterwards. With that came a raft of issues - some easily solved - others still being worked on.  Christianity was embraced and for a while would have been practiced in almost every household. . . .

As time progressed - well - the story is that when I came first to these lovely shores in 1984- I was told that in 25 years time I would be the last Methodist left standing and it would be my job to make sure to go round and turn off the lights in the church - then lock up and go about my business.  Well - we are not there - yet. It did however highlight that less and less people adhere to being a "Christian"!

The 2018 Census data on that is really interesting!! It can be found via NZ-wikipedia and downloaded as a spreadsheet!

Religion (NZ 2018 Census

    48.6% No religion
    37.3% Christianity
    2.7% Hinduism
    1.3% Islam
    1.1% Buddhism
    2.3% Others
    6.7% No answer

Note - There is about 160 odd "SUB-groups eg Anglican/Catholic/Methodist etc etc.  AND a whole raft of groups/ideology I have never heard of . . .

Wiccan???  And what do people belonging to the  "Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster" - do worship-wise????

At first glance the Christianity still reigns supreme at 37.3 % of the population.

Add the No religion/Atheists and no answer - and you get more then 50%.  Irrespective - clearly only a smitten over a 3rd of the population adheres in some form or other to  being a Christian.

So the following news stories are not overly surprising - right?!

www.resurrected-mast-branded-as-christian-symbolism-by-stealth

sadly - it would seem that some folks have taken matters into their own hands and - "extinguished" some lights . . . .

www.vandals-appear-to-have-targeted-illuminated-mast

I long held the belief (which seems is a very french thing) of life and let life! Meaning that I hope I am tolerant enough to let other people go about their business - AS LONG as that is reciprocated.  EG - they do not force their particular faith/belief systems (whatever that may be) on myself.

You want to practice hocus pokus in your home - fine!! Just do not expect me (or force me) to do the same hocus pokus in my own home!

Today very few countries are totally homogeneous - rather these days they are very much a societies with a variety of religion/ cultures present - or as they say - a melting pot of culture! Our own PM had it half right when pre-pandemic she implored kiwis to be "kind" to each other! In order to live harmoniousness together we need a good dose of tolerance!

Alas - it seems that said tolerance is in very short supply in NZ and dear one says it - in most other places in our world!!  Tolerance requires you of accepting others as they are - while being able to hold on to your own belief systems!

Tolerance is the stepping stone towards 'consideration' of other peoples life's before you pound your own chest.

Sadly we have moved on to individualism in such a great way that nowadays the "It is all about me" religion is the biggest faith system practiced on our Globe!  Where will this end I ask you?

The words of Matthew ring never truer - -

Matthew 7:3 -->  Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye?

Sighs

Travelling with Christ - Divine protection or just hocus pokus???

oldbearnews editor

Dang - or as our Aussie cousins would say - strewth!

It is an amazing place - New Zealand - or better Godzone!!  Purposely built by the old Dude up there to be his favorite playground - truly a paradise!

To go from one end of the country - (yes I am excluding the 3rd Isle here) to the other - is just over 2000km.  As long and as far as it takes to swim from Auckland to Sydney - our nearest neighbor!!! Border hopping has a different meaning here!!

Since I moved here many many many years back - we have been blessed with the ability to travel - and travel we did! After all - it is my new home so it needs thorough examination / visiting / exploring! Not contend with exploring New Zealand we also had a few trips off-shore so to speak.

Totals ---->        37670                                                      Trips in BM 1 & 2
                                                                                                   19341    km
Euro trip        1987       17179 km         30338    In OE               7637    km
Oma/Liesl       2000        1661  km           7332    In NZ
Euro trip        2002        5200   km
Euro trip        2008        4377   km
Doris & Co     2014        2413   km                        total all trips
Aussie trip     2015        1111   km
Margit           2017        3258    km                        64648.3    km
Cook Islands 2018        100      km
Euro trip       2019        2371    km

Sorry Martina - i did not keep a log of our Trips here although I could 'guesstimate'!!  Also the trips / km's shown here do not include the various (holiday) trips in the various cars we have owned in past years gone by and B4 we owned the Bearmobile's! Certainly there were several trips to Auntie Rachel in Dunedin!!

:P  Did you see the Cook Islands? ? ?   It has a 'round-trip' distance of 30km!! You could conceivably WALK around the entire Island inside a day!!

Suffice to say - this kiwi is a well traveled chap! Well over 60-thousand Kilometers and counting!!

The early years of our marriage were taken up with SAVINGS - house / children / car / and family trips back to Europe  - so less annual trips away inside New Zealand.  Later on it got easier and also more affordable - so again truly blessed that we can do this! You notice the years gone by - (with 2016 - that interruption with our son getting Leukemia) and of course 2019 started the china virus were EVERYTHING just stopped!!

I used to own a mini - my first car - and promptly crashed it one night.  No harm done to life and limb - just some pride dented - oh and of-course the car needed a bit of panel beating!  That soon got upgraded to a Citroen!! LOVELY car - such soft suspension! A dream to drive long distance!!  Lots of fond memories owning this particular car!! Because I survived the Crash - I decided someone is indeed looking after me - and in response I 'decorated' the Citroen. I also had a tiny St. George Mini cross on a chain permanently hung in the car.  I had to sell it to get enough $$$ to be able to fly out to New Zealand and begin my voluntary work for the order of St. Steven. . . Imagine that - the price of the Airline tickets was half the cost of a new car!!!  (Lovely numbers to remember - am slightly number-dyslexic - so yeah)

In between my brother had his crash which he did not survive and so his "spirit " travels with us at all times - he was the lucky sod who always found a car park right outside where he needed it no matter where or when - and ever since his passing - I have no problems myself - a change from earlier days were I struggled!!  Thanks Manfred!

Well - it is a quirk of mine and it took Mamabear a bit getting used to! Since those early days of that crash - I have ALWAYS had a cross in my vehicles!  Sometimes they were just little trinkets - and lately (seeing I am enjoying woodworking) some made from New Zealand Timber!!!

Here is the little one that I super glued to the First Bear-mobile!!  The new owner has taken a shine to it as well - so I understand it is a permanent feature in the old Van!!

Then of course - the new van needed one as well - so I  had it made one day (almost before we had bought the Van)  and again - it is fixed pretty good!!

Which does go begging the question - hmmm WHAT was the question - strewth I lost my threads . . . .

NZ Rimu (the dark bit) and some Kauri - oiled and fixed!

Yeah - rambling along here - so urm - yeah that question! urm - does having a cross with you in your vehicle provide you with adequate protection (traveling with Christ so to speak) or is it all just hocus pokus????

Come to think of it - do I need an actual figurine on the cross, in order for it to work???   Seems very quiet (unlike Don Camillo) . . .

Hmmmmm

What do you think????

Does the Ol' Dude up there have an image problem????

Thursday, October 20, 2022 0

oldbearnews editor

Howdy

Wasn't that long ago that going to a hair dresser was sort of out of the question (Thanks Covid) and so I had decided to just let my beard grow - eventually it got almost ruler length long - albeit straggly. Yeah long and straggly!!  (Notice the lack of hair further up - that is forever gone now)

Anyhow - I can vividly remember - we went to a restaurant out and the ??Indian/Pakistani??? Dude at front of house - piped up - "I am so jealous of your beard!!  - I'm going - like what????  He had this amazing full grown thick rich black beard - close to the skin - and there was not a millimeter of any exposed skin where-ever the beard was - unlike mine.  So we had a few words.

Turns out his beard stops growing after 3 weeks!! Now that is the first time I heard of that happening!! So we joked around of doing a beard swap!!! For as much as he wanted mine - I was envious of  his!!

One thing I did usually do - is to trim the few mustache-hairs as they usually grow in a straight line - straight down- and after a certain length they just get into your teeth, making eating a interesting experience!!!!

THIS time I decided to see if I can grow a decent mustache -   the final "look" yet to be decided - as -- first of all - I need some length - more then the half inch I got now. Of course some serious re-training !! of hair alignment is also needed - cue the hair gel!!!

All of that got me thinking!

We humans are a weird bunch of animal! We and dear I say it - mostly in our modern western world -  seem never to be happy with what we got - or have not got! Our body image revolves around being to tall/short/thick/thin/round/square/wrong color/wrong sex/ and any other blemishes we can dream up. We go and have nips and tucks and additions and reductions and Botox and and and. . . We spend an enormous amount of $$$$ on Hair-colour / Boob-reductions - or in-plants, or in Michael Jackson's case - a complete skin colour change!

Given (according to judean-christian) traditions we are meant to be created in the image of our God - yeah - the ol' dude up in the sky up there - what does this mean???  Is he, up there, not happy with his own image? He who - just IS!?!

Forever and ever. . . . I mean - I can imagine that after a few billions of years of looking at that mole on your shin - one might think about - a possible change?!?!?!?!

Well - I guess I could go to my cross and ask Jesus that - being his son and all he might know - - somehow I think though, I might not get an answer.

Some things just stay 'in the family' so to speak!!

Meanwhile - fingers crossed - those half dozen straggly and yes - (one hair had TRHEE colours) Hairs, will continue to grow and maybe in 12 months time I can post a picture of something closely resembling some sort of mustachio!!

Wish me luck!!

Watch out NZ - its going to be a fun ride!

A Niwa graphic shows a blast of cold air from Antarctica moving up Aotearoa, covering the whole country by Thursday.

So technically - Globally and long- term climate - we are heading into a mini-ice age! I will not be around to see that happening . . .

Probably just as well - I like my balmy summer nights - bbq outside - etc . . .

I have been reflecting on this for a day or two.

To Rose Cook I want to say - Who is the real bully here???  I have no problem with people wanting or creating change by leading by example - inspiring to follow.  Put it out there along the lines - look this is how I want to and choose to live - if that inspires you, all well and good - and if not - well its your choice. . . .

Instead changes are being forced onto society just because someone has a bee in their bonnet! It works along the lines off: I am afraid MY life is getting worse and it is YOUR fault - and YOU need to change your behavior in order for MY life to become bearable or better and if YOU do not - then YOU are a very bad person!! So Rose -- who made you the king of the sandpit???? In taking this line of approach, you no longer want my respect - rather you want my submission to your particular whims. That is a being a bully on your part!! Again - who made you the king of the sandpit???

You say: Our young people are genuinely terrified about the world they are inheriting. That is what matters. -

I say to you that every young generation is/was terrified about the world they enter! Do you remember the Cold War? 9/11? / Covid - or AIDS / not to mention the nuclear threat during the 60-70's  to name a few ??? What matters is not that these issues exist for there will always be something that will scare the youth of the day - rather what matters is HOW we respond to them!

There is this saying - "You catch more flies with honey then with vinegar"
