What Shakespeare got wrong:

Monday, June 6, 2022 0

To be or not to be . . . . -- is not the question one needs to ask themselves.

We ARE – from conception on-wards. End of story! Ok – almost!

There is that magical 5 minutes where sperm meets egg and all genetic material is rearranged in order to form a new life form! There is no human control over this – totally random and unpredictable – well almost. More on that later.

From that magical 5 minutes forward – basically and to put it brutally – this new life created faces up to a certain future-yet-to-be-determined date with death.

There is a lot that can go wrong for the first 9 months – not to mention abortion. We are 100% dependable on a friendly host to sustain us – food, shelter and warmth! Even after we are born – we depend on someone to help us grow! However – as said before – there is a lot that can go wrong at any one time! The WHO stipulates that malnutrition is the leading cause for under 10 year olds – or least an underlying condition contributing to a premature demise!

If we are lucky – we avoid death by snake bite / being eaten by crocodile (sorry Jade) / struck by lightning / facing the 200 plus idiots driving on the wrong side of 2 lane one-way highway / struck by an errant golf-ball / fixing that loose live electric cable / drowning / flying etc, etc, etc. Heck – even the simple act of getting out of bed is a cause for a pre-mature departure from life! Weather and Earth events (speak natural disasters ) feature in the WHO report too - oddly enough – though the rate of death as a % over the population is 0.01 % - So I am perfectly fine strolling up to a raging volcano!! Hmmmm

Anyhow – to recap – the Thursday before Easter this year – I – at the point of going to bed – experienced severe stabbing chest pain and also broke out in a big sweat – similar to what my wife endures due to her hormonal midlife changes!! In the last few years I used to get one or the other but never together and also usually less severe! Anyhow – I asked Pam to take me to the After Hours clinc in town. There, they poked me here there and everywhere – drew blood – listened to all things and by 1 am sent me home with the advice to go and see my usual doctor!! The Doc from the after hours place who examined me, entered into a brief sms-txt conversation – re-assuring there is nothing critical / urgently wrong! So Easter Weekend was spent in our Campervan at Wakanui Beach – doing some catching up on things needed for the van and just trying to NOT think to much about recent events.

As it happened, we were scheduled to go to the West Coast that weekend – glad we did not – as – we met a lovely couple in another Motorhome and struck up a friendship. Funny how things have a habit of working out!! So – the appointment with my local Doc was made/ saw my doc/ – more blood donated and a referral was made to Chch Hospital Hematology Unit!!

Yeah; I KNOW – T H A T unit!!!

Seems that genes can transcend 3 generations. My father had a form of leukemia and as we know to well, our son Michael is also a Leukemia patient (with two bone-marrow transplants) – thus I was really hoping that it would skip a generation!! Alas – seems it is not.

So it seems I got CLL --

https://www.leukaemia.org.nz/information/about-blood-cancers/leukaemia/chronic-lymphocytic-leukaemia/

H O T D A M N ! !

This in from Wikipedia ----> CLL affected about 904,000 people globally in 2015 and resulted in 60,700 deaths. In 2021, the estimated incidence of CLL in the United States is 21,250 new cases and 4,320 deaths. The disease most commonly occurs in people over the age of 65 due to the accumulation of genetic mutations that occurs over time. Men are diagnosed around twice as often as women (6.8 to 3.5 ratio). It is much less common in people from Asia.  Five-year survival following diagnosis is approximately 83% in the United States.  It represents less than 1% of deaths from cancer. <---- Well there is something to hold on to!!

So -I have resigned myself to the fact that, if nothing else will prematurely remove me from this planet (fingers crossed), – then the CLL will – in the end!!! I most definitely will not die of old age . . .

Not that this will matter too much. What does matter now is HOW I live my life ‘till then!! Actually really this would be a matter since conception – right??  So you see – to be or not to be is indeed misleading – it should be more like – I am, so what do I do now -- with my life ‘till I am no longer . . . .

Okay, Dear Lord – If you have it in your will that I should win some $$$ in Lotto – please make it earlier then later – as a week b4 my departure is of no use to me! I would rather Pam could retire earlier and we can spend some quality time together in our Old Age and we can grow OLD together. Growing old is only fun if one can stay healthy. So ol’ dude up there – about our little understanding – you remember that???? I stay faithful no matter what and you look after me. I am holding up my end of the deal!! Just letting you know! I am also holding you to your end, as ..... what do you mean, you are looking after me no matter what as well??? When did that change happen??? Ahh Lord - there is never any use in arguing with You! You are always in the right. OK - Your will be done.

Meanwhile if you please – it is full steam ahead with the enjoyment part of life!! As I am typing this we are sitting at a campsite in the middle of nowhere and admire the blue ocean. Wine / Mushroom / Nutella and other things have been stored away and at some stage I should start a fire to bbq the steak . .

Oh BTW – Lord -I have at home a template for a coffin – any idea how soon I shall start working on that??? I already got the cross for it made and I am thinking of Rimu timber as a base with some Totara inlay and the handles in Matai or southern Rata - - excuse me – say what – you will let me know later when the time is right? . . . . oh, okay . . . waits . . . .

Meanwhile – folks – please do and go and have some fun.

You never know when life throws you an obstacle on your journey . . . .

OH Yeah - Happy 61 Birthday Papabear - some birthday!!!!!

And the winner is . . . .

Ok not me

However

With all the changes in my life - I did some research - and have at a loose count seen about 180 of the movies that have won either or both - Best picture / Best actor male / female and best supporting actor male / female!  Some heaps more to catch up on.

Watched last night Tootsie!! Priceless

Meanwhile - some interesting stats to ponder:

The Oscars were interesting - for  the absenteeism

No Oscar (actors - male or female) winners in any Movies from :
Star Wars / H Potter / James Bond / Bourne / Indiana Jones series /

No Oscars for Dean Martin / Sammy Davis Jr / Elvis P / - (though Frank Sinatra did win for his role in "From here to Eternity" - epic) / Arnold Schwarzenegger  (don't think he ever got nominated) / Bob Hope /  Clint Eastwood (never as an Actor but 4 from Directing etc) / Harrison Ford (nominated for male lead in "Witness" but no win!) / Rock Hudson / Doris Day (nominated for "Pillow Talk" only) / Tony Curtis / Cary Grant / John Wayne (one from True Grit) / Sean Connery (only one as best supporting male actor) / - there would be other  famous names!!!

Spencer Tracey and Tom Hanks the only 2 Actors to  EVER win Back to Back Oscars - in modern times!
Apart from ---> There were the original first years back in the dark ages  of 1927 with Email Jannings (male) - 2 / Janet Gaynor (female) - 3 winning - from 12 Films made (1927/28), so not a lot of choice back then there.

Noticeable too is the fact they are running out of ideas with lately a lot of Biography films being made - Winston Churchill / Queen / Ford vs Ferrari / Bohemian Rhapsody etc etc

From the blockbuster movies . . .

  • Lord of the Rings (The return of the King) -- (nominated 11 - won 11 - no actors)
  • Titanic (nominated 14 - won 11 - no actors)
  • The last Emperor (nominated 9 - won 9 - - no actors
  • Braveheart (nominated 10 - won 5 - no actors)
  • Schindler's list (nominated 12 - won 7 -- no actors)
  • Dances with Wolves (nominated 12 - won 7 -- no actors)
  • Out of Africa (nominated 11 -  won 7  -- no actors
  • Sound of Music (nominated 10 - won 5- no actors)
  • Doctor Zhivago (nominated 10 - won 5- no actors)
  • The English Patient (nominated 12 - won 9  -- incl best female support actor only)
  • Forrest Gump (nominated 13 - won 6 -- incl best actor only)
  • Amadeus (nominated 11 - won 7 -- incl best male actor only)
  • Unforgiven (nominated 9 - won 4 -- incl best male support actor only)
  • A Passage to India (nominated 11 - won 2 -- incl best female support actor only)
  • Terms of Endearment (nominated 11  -won 5 -- incl best female / best male support actor only)
  • Gandhi (nominated 11 - won 8 -- incl best male actor only)
  • Tootsie (nominated 10 - won 1 -- best female support actor only)
  • My Fair Lady (nominated 12 - won 8 - best male actor only)

There are many others like this - big blockbusters - but no actors or only one . . . .
Moral of the story  - stay away from big blockbusters?!

Dancing with The Stars returned - was it worth it???

Monday, May 30, 2022 0

So after a short hiatus the show had returned.

After the first episode the headline screamed:

Stuff       Mon 25 April --  DWTS Recap: First couple sent home from Dancing with the Stars — yes, already
NZ Herald   Mon 25 April  --  DWTS  A kiss, a spell and a millionaire-maker goes home

Dancing with the Stars: The nine celebrities for this year's show revealed - NZ Herald

So I decided to flag this - and more importantly (just as a fun project) to faithfully copy the headlines from our major online news media; - I wanted to see how they were "SELLING" the show in the future!  You know how this works - a good product sells itself - the more awful a product the more outrageous the advertising!

Nero had it right - Bread and games to keep the masses happy.... just not sure if this is the "right" games . . . ok before you get your knickers in a collective online twat - it is my personal opinion. I am sure there are far more important issues to get our head around . . . . or better ways to chill out . . . .

Anyhow

Damn it - the things gone wonky

I used to have this neat label-cloud - along these lines

Tag Cloud Examples

Somehow I broke the system - it just shows the list of all

Hmmmm

PS - Now - today in Nov - I find that when you click on a label - it pulls up - IF you are lucky 5 posts instead the full list of 30 or 50  that have said label - so i really buggered it up good!!   Hmmm shall I delete the label thing altogether????   Its no use in its current form!!

Encouraging or misleading you

oldbearnews editor

The other day I saw an inspiring news article -

autumn-colours-in-new-zealand

Anyhow - as some of you MAY remember - I am a part time photography hobbyist - among other things! And this is just inspiring stuff.

I was not familiar with this particular building so googled (as you do) it and ended up a being a little surprised!

I am sure the colorful image came ex calendar from some time back! Which goes begging the question about the article! I know - it is about inspiring  you and getting you to go there and all - its just that the expectations will be very high to go there and see this - and when you actually make it there - well guess what!!!

The one on the right must be a very old picture (again - possibly from an old calendar shot??) - the one on the left is from the google car (street view) not so long ago - clearly there are a few (yellow) trees gone missing . . . . urm - so it goes begging the question if the news article was misleading you ?????  Imaging going there and expecting lots of yellow only to find . . . . . this!!!!

How hard can it be????

Thursday, April 7, 2022 2

oldbearnews editor

Hmmm - yes this will be a bit of a rant - so yeah - it is a serious (or should that be a TRICK) question!!

HOW  hard can it be to post a parcel from  New Zealand to Austria????   Wanna guess how long it takes???

I am aware that Covid19 and the resulting logistical issues is  / has always been used as a way of "explaining" why things to Post - or ship - from anywhere to anywhere in the world, is taking so much longer!!  It is accepted that a letter  that used to take up to 10 days (to go from NZ to UK )  can now take twice as long - simply because the volume is the same but the regular flights are no longer - urm - regular or better less plentiful (at least to and from NZ) !!  Ergo some things have to be in the cue and fly later - no problem there!

B U T -

A (Christmas)  parcel we posted to Austria in early September 2021 - eventually made it to Austria (I mean we allowed 4 yes  F O U R  MONTHS  for delivery instead of the usual 2 or 3 weeks )  - and it was promptly returned to us by end of January this year!   Seems the local postie over there is unable to read and deliver to the correct address - so naturally instead of using their brain and READ and deliver to the correct address - they send it back here!!

All this while the Austrian Postal services say no postal services to NZ (and a few other places) due to Covid19!  Meanwhile other countries like Germany for example have no issues shipping to NZ!! Austrian Post also failed to understand - or better yet is/was unable to explain - how they can ship to Sydney Australia - which at the time had a far stricter lock-down issues then NZ had, just not here!!!

I mean - GO FIGURE!!!!

Anyhow - we repacked said parcel and dropped it back into the Post!! This time we used a Computer and printer to print the Address - c l e a r l y  readable - so fingers crossed it should be safely delivered!!!

Right????   Yeah Nah!!!!

I just logged on and did a track and trace on that item and it would seem it was delivered to --  wait for it -- can you guess ? ? ? ?

A U S T R A L I A

Ok they do read similar - but really --- HOW  HARD CAN IT BE??????

Sighs

It has been shipped back to NZ / Auckland and hopefully this time it will be on a correct European bound plane - taking no doubt another 4-8 weeks!!!

Actually - it took 41 days from arrival in Melbourne to send it back to Auckland NZ - honestly - a row-boat would have been quicker!!!

There is a question here too - given it is a 4 hour flight and they are going DAILY multiple times, how long did it take a staffer to read and comprehend (that it is the wrong country)  and make a decision to send it back to NZ - let alone process that . . . . or even better yet -  to FORWARD  it onto the next plane Europe bound . . .

By the time it arrives where it needs to be - the item will be a good fit for the GRAND-child . . . . . Never-mind the calendar being out-dated

Watch this space there might be more . . .

Annual Christmas Epistle 2021

Monday, December 13, 2021 0

Ah yeah - seems only just yesterday I posted last years little life story for the year!  RE-reading that - NOTHING has changed!

Oh sure, the China Virus is doing its thing and Life is generally progressing - who knows in which direction. However - last night - we took Michael back to ED and he's been re-admitted into Ward6 - the Leukemia Ward!

Heaves a big sigh!!!

Anyhow - here is a short overview from last year!

PS - at least the post is getting to other places - many in Austria got theirs already!!! WHICH does not explain why post from Austria cannot get to NZ!!  Go figure. . . .

Howdy.

At point of drafting this letter we are sitting at the beach-campsite at Kekerengu inside our Bearmobile#2, with the sun streaming in and a fresh breeze coming of the beach!! A good time to draft our annual Christmas epistle.

Another year, another set of news. Last year we posted calendars excluding letters, to various points on the globe and it took anywhere from 3 weeks to 4 months, and in one case still not being delivered! :( Hopefully this year it will be better and finds you all in good health if not spirits!!

Of course like all other countries we ended up being in some form of lockdown. Our virus free nation did import said virus and as I type Delta is running around freely, mostly in Auckland! Like many other nations, everyone is putting a lot of faith into being vaccinated.

Pam had worked from home for 2 weeks at the end of August – and found it easier going then at the last lockdown! Her commute time to work was exactly 35 seconds – so Reinhold had fun timing the lunches and dinners. They had to be on time on the table!!

One of the bigger news from us is, that we sold our trainer-wheels – yes the original Bearmobile was sold to a lovely couple in Taranaki (and as we are told, is having a great time still touring NZ). We had made the decision that we liked going away in a camper and really wanted a permanent bed made up in said camper; so that required selling our old one and buying a new van. We talked with the bank and eventually got our Bearmobile #2!!! It is a lovely big van with a bigger fridge and 2 single beds. Sadly due to Michael not being well and our Government restricting people movements, we have not been out and about as much as had wanted! However we did survive a mid-winter trip to Queenstown, where we caught up with Jonathan and his place of work (Remarkable Skifield). We’d just visited Jonathan when the next day the entire country was put in lockdown and we had to do a quick long trip back home!!

Reinhold has re-discovered his passion for woodwork and has set up a *cough* (TINY) part of his garage with tools and timber and been busy making things. Initially some 3d crosses were made (way to heavy to export). He also buys dilapidated furniture (coffee tables so far) and restores them to former glory days and then tries and sells them for a small profit (to cover the cost of tools and materials). Lately, one of his friends has been helping out – partly for his friends mental health and partly to be useful in his early retirement, and partly to keep Reinhold ‘honest’! Reinhold has celebrated his 60th Birthday in June and is now “officially” classed as old – although still 5 years away from receiving NZ Pension and the much coveted ‘Gold Card’ which gives discounts to Seniors on selected activities / public transport etc! Sadly his “60th Birthday gift” could not be realized – a trip away again to the Cook Islands for a mid-winter break! For one, we sunk most of our $$ into the Bearmobile #2 and also we still have big restrictions on international travel. Maybe next year!!!!

Michael is an ongoing concern! I lost count how many times we did mad dashes into the hospital for further ongoing medical care. He had to have a 2nd Bone marrow transplant which came from Germany at the middle of March this year! That will be his last transplant. He told us the other day that he is on 14 Pills – just for breakfast!! It is a daily challenge to stay focused and remain positive. ONE day this will be all behind us too.

Jonathan has completed his Te Araroa walk in early April 2021 – a challenge to finish it in the end – so he can claim now, to have walked the length of NZ – all 3000km plus!!! He is keeping himself busy with his work at the skifield (hiring out of ski gear) and has picked up a summer job back at Milford Sound – so he is very happy about that! We may see him here for a week or two, in between jobs!

Have fun.

Hearing God????

Saturday, October 16, 2021 0

Howdy

I do remember Don Camillo having lots of conversations with Christ from the Cross. Quite a lively discussions at times! Challenging at times as well as affirming! Those were the days!

Anyhow - I made mine - it is Purple-Heart / White Pine and Rimu trim!

(The trinity) !!!!

However I have not heard any Perls of wisdom's coming from the cross - and just realized -

MAYBE

it is because there is no Christ on the cross?!?!?!!

Hmmmmmmm

This of course would require an expert opinion! Who to ask????

Anyhow - I am really pleased how this turned out!!! I was going to to either sell it or give away to a worthy cause! Sadly there is no market for it in NZ and - it has grown on me to the point, I would find it impossible to give away!!!

And you never know - I might hear the voice after all - ae Don Camillo?!?!?!

bear printHave fun!

PS:  Maybe I am not a good listener?????

When getting a spare part costs . . . . .

oldbearnews editor

Yes - I owe a lot of woodworking tools and - unfortunately - I dropped one the other day! :(

This is one of them - and  I use it a lot - it is a nifty little "trimmer" not a 'router' per say but does most of the same functions!!  Yeah - I dropped it and promptly broke a tiny itty bitty little plastic wheel!

So do I go and order a replacement part of do I toss it and get a full replacement!! Hmmmm - Yeah lets try and order a part!!!  Full credit to the hardware store - they were great to deal with - hassle-free and all!

So here is the Kicker - the full unit retails at NZ $ 79.-

The (plastic) part - (no bigger then a size 5 nut)  costs - wait for it . . . . . . . $ 27.50.-

Sighs

So I did the decent thing and thought about the landfill and spent mega bucks to stop the landfill from getting to full!!!

Hahaha the packaging of it was overkill as well - it came inside a A4 sized bubble bag!!! And I do not really want to think about which part had a greater carbon footprint!!!

Anyhow - all back together and working! I just have to be more careful next time and PLACE it softly on the work-bench!!!!

bear print

Have fun!

PS - by way of comparison - this is how big the spare part actually was - you will see it fitted nicely  . . . .

Don Camillo and God have a discussion

Saturday, August 7, 2021 0
oldbearnews editor

Don Camillo was unhappy to give up entirely on the idea of the flood, so he tried to salvage something from it.
You could at least make it rain a bit. The land is dry and the reservoirs are all empty.'
It will rain, Don Camillo, it will rain,' Jesus reassured him.
'There has always been rain. ever since the world began.
The mechanism has been set in motion so that it will rain when the time is right.
Or are you of the opinion that the Eternal One has slipped up in his management of the universe?'
Don Camillo bowed.
'Very well,'he said sighing.  'I understand  what  you  are saying  perfectly.
But if a  poor country priest can't even allow himself to ask his God for a few bucketfuls of rain, well forgive me, but it's disheartening.'

https://dustedoff.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/pic3.png

'You are right a thousand times over, Don Camillo.
All that remains is for you to go on strike in protest.'

Don Camillo was still unhappy and walked off with his head down, but Jesus called him back.

Jesus looked grave.

'Fret not, Don Camillo,' whispered Jesus.
'I know that men wasting Gods grace looks to you like a mortal sin, because you know that I got down from a horse to pick up a breadcrumb.
But you  should  forgive them because They do not mean to offend  God.
They search  desperately  for justice  on  earth because they no longer have faith in divine justice, and just as desperately go after worldly goods because they have no faith in the recompense to come.
They only believe in what they can touch and see.
The flying machines, they are the angels of this infernal hell on earth which they are trying in vain to turn into a paradise.
It is a body of ideas - a culture — that leads to ignorance, because when a culture is not supported by faith, there comes a point where man sees only the mathematics of things.
And the harmony of this mathematics becomes his God, and he forgets that it is God who created this mathematics and this harmony
But your God is not made of numbers, Don Camillo, and good angels fly in the skies of your paradise.
Progress makes man's world ever smaller: one  day, when cars  run  at 100 miles a minute, the world will seem microscopic to men, and then  mankind  will  find  itself like a sparrow on the pommel of a flagpole and will present itself to the infinite, and in the infinite it will rediscover God and faith in the true life.
And mankind will hate the machines which have reduced the world to a handful of numbers and it will destroy them with its own hands.
But all this will take time, Don Camillo.
So do not worry, your bicycle and your scooter are in no danger for now' Jesus smiled, and Don Camillo thanked him for putting him on earth.

:)

There is so much to unpack in this passage - I leave it to you though to do just that and come to your own conclusions!!

Well - what can I say.  Seems the folks in the dessert have heard about the New Zealand spraying program (if you remember - designed for clearing the skies for the tourists so they can take true blue dome day photos in their fav holiday spots)!

Then they took the idea and reversed the idea!!  Good on them!! Not that this particular idea has been round  for a few years . . . . .

No royalties from the project will be forthcoming - so that is a bit of a bummer . . .

Does Humanity need to build another Ark???

oldbearnews editor

News from around the world are not great.

Apart from a virus running rampart there is the annual rainfall season and many places have experienced floods!  Germany / New Zealand and China are the most recent places where there has been a decent rainfall creating "downstream" issues.  There is nothing funny about rising waters - it is a menace in many respects! Trying to "dry out" a house is different from drying a few clothes!  Of course people need to blame someone - anyone or something for their misfortune, and they shout from the roof - "Global climate change!"

Yeah right!   Nature will do what nature wants to do.  Has done so for millennia and will do for the next few millennia!

Today's news-piece from our sometime honest writers ---->

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/asia/300363391/china-blasts-dam-to-divert-floods-that-killed-at-least-25

If you get to the bottom of this article you will find the last paragraph - expressing the very thought I had for the last 50 years!!

snip --- China routinely experiences floods during the summer, but the growth of cities and conversion of farmland into subdivisions has worsened the impact of such events.  --- end snip

Vehicles are stranded after a heavy downpour in Zhengzhou city.  Well duh - IF you build houses in what is historically known to be a flood plain - why are you peeved when there is a flood flooding your precious dwelling???

W H O S  fault is that then!!!    Have a good look into the mirror, and leave Climate change alone!!

Don Camillo and Peppone

It has been a very long time - still remember the black and white films starring Don Camillo (the village priest) and Peppone (the communist mayor).

It is a delightful story - set and written post second world war in Italy i.e 1946.

Recently I discovered the (in German) films via YouTube! It is required watching of course!!

Then I came across the books which have at long last been translated into English! Thanks to Amazon and a credit card and international posting (which given recent Covid19 mailings IS indeed remarkable) they arrived here in less then 7 days!! yussss

The books themselves are a collection of stories - each duly published in the news paper way back in 1946 - short stories that can stand on their own.  The films took all of them and made them into a long storybook - weaving them through time and place.

The thing that always has attracted me is that at times Don Camillo has "conversations" with Christ on the Cross as well as Mary (you know - the mother of said Jesus)!!  The dialogue is thoughtful and at times thought provoking.

 Samples of them are:

"When you share your last crust of bread with a beggar, you mustn’t behave as if you were throwing a bone to a dog. You must give humbly, and thank him for allowing you to have a part in his hunger.”

------------

“It is right to hate sin, but not to hate the sinner.”

--------

“No, Don Camillo; you didn’t exactly steal it. Peppone had two cigars in his pocket. Peppone is a Communist. He believes in sharing things. By skillfully relieving him of one cigar, you only took your fair share.”

--------

“When God gives you an inch, don’t take a mile.”

-------

"When things do not go well, finding a way of making them go better always seems less important than finding someone to take the blame."  <----- love this one - so true even nowadays!!!

-------

As he passed by the altar, the Lord frowned down at him.
"Lord," said Don Camillo, "Whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted." "Don Camillo," said the Lord, "for some time now you've been skating on thin ice."  "With God's help, no ice is too thin," said Don Camillo.

-----

Don Camillo hastily put on the leather harness with the support for the foot of the cross, lifted the enormous crucifix from the altar and adjusted it in the socket. Then he sighed: "All the same, they need not have made this Cross quite so heavy." "You're telling Me!" replied the Lord smiling. "I had to carry it all the way up on that hill and I never had shoulders such as yours."

-----

“What should I do?” Don Camillo had inquired.
“Anoint your back with a little oil beaten up in water and hold your tongue,” the Lord had replied from above the altar.  “We must forgive those who offend us. That is the rule.”  “Very true, Lord,” agreed Don Camillo, “but on this  occasion we are discussing blows, not offenses.”
“And  what  do  you  mean  by  that?  Surely  you  are  not  trying  to  tell  me  that  injuries  done  to  the  body  are  more  painful  than those aimed at the spirit?”
“I see your point, Lord. But You should also bear in mind that in the beating of me, who am Your minister, an injury has been done to Yourself also. I am really more concerned on Your behalf than on my own.”
“And was I not a greater minister of God than you are? And did I not forgive those who nailed me to the Cross?”
“There is never any use in arguing with You!” Don Camillo  had exclaimed. “You are always in the right. Your will be done.  We  must  forgive.  All  the  same,  don't  forget  that  if  these  ruffians,  encouraged  by  my  silence,  should  crack  my  skull, the responsibility will lie with You. I could cite several passages from the Old Testament. . . .”
“Don Camillo, are you proposing to instruct me in the Old Testament? As for this business, I assume full responsibility.
Moreover,  strictly  between  Ourselves,  the  beating  has  done  you  no  harm.  It  may  teach  you  let  politics  alone  in  my  house.”

------------------------------------

Jesus: "Sie spricht mit meiner Mutter"  (she speaks with my Mother)
Don Camillo: "Die Ärmste!" (Poor Mary)

-----------------------------

The underlying message within the many stories told - is that compassion and practicality are far better than religious or political dogmatism.
